How do holidays make you feel?

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday ever since I was little. But not because of the presents I received, but for the gifts I was able to give. Mostly handmade and then more purchased as I grew older and made more money.

Over the past few years, I’ve been able to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa so December is jam packed with joy for me.

Mate taught me the prayer to say when lighting the menorah and I’ve been the one to get additional candles each year. They’ll be rainbow colored this time. I will miss doing the lighting in person with his family, but perhaps we could do a video chat version.

Christmas is usually spent with my family sitting in a circle and passing presents around. Next a series of classic movies and then delicious dinner. Not sure if we’ll be able do so this year, but again video chat provides at least the means to see and hear them.

I only started celebrating Kwanzaa after I moved out of my parents’ house, but it is the one I appreciate the most. I love how each day has a particular theme that can be thoughtfully discussed. Emphasis on home cooked food and handmade items really helps bring the focus back on each other instead of consumerism.

I recognize that not everyone has a fondness for this season. I hope you are able to find some peace at the end of this whirlwind of a year.

Are December holidays a time of fun for you or would you rather they pass on by?
